Inside the LA Organizing Awards
I had no idea how my day would unfold when I arrived at my office last Tuesday.
Waiting for me was a message from Dorothy Breininger, professional organizer who has appeared on Hoarders, Dr. Phil and The View to name a few:
1-800-GOT-JUNK? was invited to the 2010 Los Angeles Organizing Awards!
Fast forward to Saturday, Jan. 30. There I was under the blinding lights of the red carpet at the historic Raleigh Studios on Melrose (which I discovered is the oldest studio in Hollywood).
Among the sea of glamorous professional organizers was Peter Walsh, described by TV Guide Magazine as “Oprah’s personal organization guru”, and New York Times best-selling author Julie Morgenstern.
After all the photos and seats were taken the awards were underway.
Then we heard the words we were waiting for.
“The Avery Dennison Special Recognition Award goes to:
I fell in step with Jason Brewer, field producer for the show, Dorothy Breininger and Standolyn Robertson, another organizer on the show, to accept the award on behalf of everyone at 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. It was a singular honour. Words escaped me.
In true Hollywood fashion, I can now thank those who made this possible:
To Avery Dennison, the presenting sponsor for the evening.
To John Trosko of Organizing LA who helped put everything together, even at the last minute.
To Dorothy Breininger for inviting 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to participate in the evening to begin with.
To every one I met, shook hands, exchanged cards or shared a laugh with, thank you. I won’t be forgetting that night for a long, long time.
Boarding my flight the next morning at 6:20 am, I had a moment to reflect on the past 24 hours.
There was a common thread that ran through the evening for me: professional organizers really love 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. It’s not just an infatuation, it’s a full blown love affair.
This affection doesn’t just flow from our role on Hoarders. It’s more than what we do. It became very apparent that professional organizers use and refer 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to their clients because of the way we do what we do.
If the LA Organizing Awards were any indication, we are well on our way to achieving our goal of making the ordinary business of junk removal exceptional.
