It’s been proven time and again that clutter causes stress for many people. And that crowded and cluttered bookshelf you stare at while sitting on the couch? It can throw the room off, making the entire space look messy, even if it’s tidy.

Organizing a bookshelf can be daunting, emotional and overwhelming because it invariably involves tossing books. Yes, those collections of paper, words, and bindings really do hold a great deal of sentiment for many of us. We become attached to our books and the thought of parting with even a few can send shivers down our spines. We just don’t know what to do with them. Throwing them in the garbage is the worst possible option!

These two articles – one by Misty Sanico published on Examiner.com, and the other by Katie on her blog, Making This Home – both offer good tips on how to go about organizing your bookshelf. I find the tips at the end of Katie’s post on what you can do with the books you get rid of very helpful.
